Overheat / temp alarm

Calm, sequential — protect the engine first.

  1. Throttle back, verify raw-water stream / telltale where equipped.
  2. Check intake screens for plastic, grass, or bag fouling.
  3. Do not keep running hard on a confirmed overheat — collateral damage is expensive.
  4. Log hours, recent service, and impeller age before the yard visit.

When to haul / call a yard: No telltale recovery, repeated overheat, or steam / smoke — haul or tow; do not “limp home” for miles.

No-start / hard start

Battery and safety interlocks before deep diagnosis.

  1. Verify kill switch / lanyard, gear in neutral, and battery switches.
  2. Load-test start battery; clean terminals and grounds.
  3. Smell for fuel; check primer bulb firmness on outboards.
  4. After storage: stale fuel and varnish are common — don’t crank endlessly.

When to haul / call a yard: Cranks strong but never fires after basic checks, or electrical smoke / melted cables.

Unexpected bilge water

Find the source — don’t just pump and forget.

  1. Run pumps; note rate of rise with pumps off.
  2. Check packing / shaft seal, thruhulls, seacocks, hose clamps.
  3. Inspect for deck leak paths after rain vs underway ingress.
  4. Confirm float switches and backup pump operation.

When to haul / call a yard: Rising water with unknown source, failed seacock, or structural crack suspicion — haul out.

Ghost electrical faults

Voltage and corrosion before module roulette.

  1. Measure voltage at the device under load, not only at the battery.
  2. Inspect green corrosion on grounds and thruhull bonding.
  3. Review recent DIY electronics adds (NMEA power / terminators).
  4. Check charger profile matches battery chemistry.

When to haul / call a yard: Repeated low-voltage events, melted insulation, or ABYC-critical AC shore power issues.
